Treasure flower (Gazania rigens) is a South African perennial bearing large, brilliantly colored daisy-like flowers in shades of orange, yellow, red, pink, and white, often with contrasting stripes and dark central rings. Retains foliage through winter.
Gazania requires full sun (6+ hours); flowers close on cloudy days and in shade, so maximizing direct sun is essential for continuous bloom in NE Florida.
Very drought-tolerant once established; water sparingly and ensure excellent drainage, as extended wet conditions or poorly drained soil invite crown rot and fungal disease, especially during Florida's summer rainy season.
Tolerates poor, sandy NE Florida soils with excellent drainage; amend only minimally with compost if desired. Fertilize lightly in spring and fall with a balanced slow-release fertilizer; avoid excess nitrogen, which reduces flowering.
