Pyrostegia venusta
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
Flame Vine (Pyrostegia venusta) is a vigorous tropical vine from South America producing spectacular cascades of vivid orange tubular flowers primarily in winter and early spring — peak bloom in NE Florida. It climbs vigorously by tendrils and is zone 9b hardy, though it requires consistent pruning to prevent it from overrunning other plants. Starting at $64.95.
Bloom season. Good planting window.
Handles summer heat well once established.
Ideal planting window.
Bloom season. Retains foliage through winter.
Demands full sun for the best bloom display; partial shade significantly reduces flowering. In NE Florida, plant in the sunniest available location on a sturdy fence, trellis, or pergola.
Highly drought-tolerant once established; prefers lean, dry conditions and actually blooms better with some water stress. Water sparingly in NE Florida — established plants rarely need irrigation beyond seasonal rainfall.
Thrives in poor, sandy, well-drained soil — the typical NE Florida landscape condition. Avoid rich soil or heavy fertilization which promotes foliage over flowers. Prune after bloom in late spring to control vigorous growth; note that UF/IFAS lists this vine as a potential problem species in natural areas — avoid planting near native habitat.
