Mammillaria
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
Pincushion cacti (Mammillaria spp.) are compact, globe- to cylinder-shaped cacti covered in geometric spirals of tubercles tipped with clusters of spines, producing rings of small pink, red, or white flowers near the crown in spring and summer. Hardy to zone 9b outdoors with excellent drainage, they are excellent low-water container or rock garden plants for NE Florida. Starting at $14.95.
Provide full sun; in NE Florida, Mammillaria thrives outdoors with 6+ hours of direct sun daily. Nursery-grown specimens acclimated to shade cloth should be hardened off gradually before full outdoor sun exposure.
Water sparingly—allow soil to dry completely between waterings during the growing season (spring through fall), then reduce to once monthly or less in winter. In NE Florida's humid climate, excellent drainage is critical to prevent rot.
Plant in very fast-draining cactus mix—combine commercial cactus soil with 50% coarse perlite or coarse sand to compensate for Florida's humidity. Apply a diluted cactus fertilizer (half strength) once in spring and once in midsummer.
