Monardella villosa
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 15.
Coyote Mint (Monardella villosa) is a low, fragrant California native perennial bearing lavender flower heads in summer, highly attractive to bees and butterflies. It demands dry summers, lean soil, and excellent drainage — conditions that make it unsuitable for NE Florida's hot, humid, rainy climate. A Florida-native Salvia or Monarda is a more reliable pollinator-friendly substitute in zone 9b. Starting at $19.95.
Full sun required; however, Monardella villosa is a California native adapted to dry Mediterranean summers and is poorly suited to NE Florida's hot, humid, rainy summer climate. Failure from summer rot is likely.
Strictly drought-tolerant; summer moisture causes crown and root rot. NE Florida's wet summers (June–September) are incompatible with this plant's requirements without exceptional drainage and overhead protection — it is not recommended for this region.
Requires lean, dry, rocky or coarse sandy soil with perfect drainage. Do not fertilize. This plant is native to dry California chaparral and is not adapted to humid southeastern conditions; substituting a Florida-native Monarda or Salvia is strongly recommended for zone 9b.
