Citrosa (Pelargonium 'Citrosum') is a tender perennial scented geranium with soft, deeply lobed leaves that emit a strong citrus-lemon fragrance when brushed. It produces small lavender-pink flowers from spring through fall and grows as a true perennial in NE Florida zone 9b, thriving in full sun with well-drained soil. Despite its marketing as a mosquito repellent, studies show it does not repel mosquitoes effectively; grow it for its ornamental fragrance instead. Starting at $19.95.
Thrives in full sun with 6+ hours of direct light daily; tolerates light afternoon shade in NE Florida's intense summer heat, which can reduce stress and extend bloom. Avoid deep shade, which reduces flowering and makes plants leggy.
Water when the top inch of soil is dry; avoid overwatering, which causes root rot. In NE Florida's wet summers, ensure excellent drainage. Allow soil to dry somewhat between waterings; container plants may need water every 2–3 days in summer heat.
Plant in well-drained sandy or loam soil; amend heavy soils with perlite or coarse sand. Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Pinch tips regularly to encourage bushy growth and continuous bloom.
