Centaurea cyanus
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 25.
Bachelor's Button (Centaurea cyanus) is a cool-season annual producing cheerful blue, pink, or white daisy-like flowers on slender, upright stems. In NE Florida zone 9b it is grown as a fall-sown annual, blooming winter through spring and declining with summer heat; it is an excellent pollinator plant and cut flower. Starting at $3.50.
Bachelor's Button needs full sun (6+ hours daily) for compact, upright growth and abundant blooms. In NE Florida, a full-sun site is essential; shaded plants become floppy and bloom poorly.
Water moderately during establishment; once growing, Bachelor's Button tolerates dry spells but should not be allowed to wilt completely. Avoid overwatering — well-drained soil and infrequent deep watering are best.
Grows well in average, well-drained sandy or loamy soil with no special fertility requirements. Avoid heavy fertilization, which promotes leggy growth. In NE Florida, sow seed directly in fall (October–November) for winter and spring blooms.
