Iris virginica
Fresh this week. Last restocked Apr 13.
Southern Blue Flag (Iris virginica) is a Florida-native wetland perennial with spectacular blue-violet blooms in spring. It thrives at pond margins, rain gardens, and stream banks in NE Florida — tolerating everything from saturated soil to shallow standing water — and provides coarse, upright foliage interest throughout the year. Starting at $9.95.
Grows best in full sun to part shade; in NE Florida, partial shade in the afternoon helps prevent stress in shallow-water plantings during intense summer heat. Tolerates full sun at permanently moist pond margins.
A wetland native requiring consistently wet to saturated soils; ideal at pond edges, rain garden low spots, or stream banks. Can grow in standing water several inches deep. Also tolerates normal garden soils if kept consistently moist with regular irrigation.
Thrives in sandy, loamy, clay, or organic mucky soils that stay wet. No special fertilizer needed in natural or enriched wetland settings. Divide clumps after flowering (late spring) to maintain vigor; spreads by rhizomes and will naturalize at water edges.
