Muhlenbergia dumosa
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 11.
An ornamental grass native to Arizona and northwestern Mexico with tall semi-woody stems covered in lacy, feathery green foliage that moves gracefully in the slightest breeze, giving it the appearance of bamboo. The foliage fades to tawny tan in cooler months. Starting at $24.95.
In NE Florida's intense heat, Bamboo Muhly performs best in part sun to part shade — bright filtered light or morning sun with afternoon shade. Full afternoon sun can cause bleaching and decline; this grass is better suited to dappled light in the Florida landscape than its western-native origins suggest.
Drought tolerant once established; water weekly during establishment, then reduce to supplemental watering during prolonged dry periods. Allow soil surface to dry slightly between waterings — consistently wet conditions promote root rot in Florida's humid conditions.
Plant in well-drained sandy or loamy soil; lean soil is preferred, as over-rich soil encourages floppy growth. Apply a light slow-release balanced fertilizer in spring only; avoid over-fertilizing. Do not cut back below 6–8 inches, as this grass recovers slowly from hard pruning.
