Myrtus communis
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 15.
Common Myrtle (Myrtus communis) is a fragrant, evergreen Mediterranean shrub with small, aromatic glossy leaves and a profusion of white, honey-scented flowers in spring and summer, followed by blue-black berries. Hardy through Zone 9b, it makes a versatile hedge, specimen, or container plant for northeast Florida landscapes, tolerating heat, drought, and a range of well-drained soils once established. Starting at $59.95.
Common myrtle thrives in full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct light daily in northeast Florida; it tolerates light shade but produces fewer flowers. Provide wind shelter in exposed sites to protect from occasional cold snaps.
Drought-tolerant once established; water regularly during the first growing season to encourage deep rooting. Avoid overwatering — well-drained soil is essential, as standing water causes root rot.
Adaptable to a range of well-drained soils including sandy, loam, and clay, with a preferred pH of 6.5–7.5. Fertilize lightly in spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer; heavy feeding is not necessary and can reduce aromatic oil production.
