Neptunia pubescens
Fresh this week. Last restocked Mar 9.
Tropical Puff (Neptunia pubescens) is a low-growing Florida native perennial in the legume family, celebrated for its sensitive, fern-like leaflets that fold instantly when touched and its bright yellow puffball flowers that bloom from spring through fall. A fast-spreading groundcover for sunny, well-drained sites, it hosts Ceraunus Blue butterfly larvae and attracts native bees. Starting at $9.95.
Plant in full sun for best flowering and densest growth; Neptunia pubescens is a Florida native that thrives in open, sunny sites. Partial shade is tolerated but reduces bloom and spread.
Drought-tolerant once established in NE Florida's sandy soils; water regularly after planting to establish, then reduce to occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Avoid soggy conditions — it tolerates periodic wet spells but prefers well-drained sites.
Thrives in sandy to loamy, well-drained soils — including calcareous or higher-pH substrates common in coastal NE Florida. As a nitrogen-fixing legume it requires little to no supplemental fertilizer; excessive nitrogen reduces flowering.
