Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 25.
The garden strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) is a hybrid fruit developed in the 18th century, producing the familiar bright-red, cone-shaped berries with sweet, juicy flesh. A low-growing perennial, it spreads by runners and produces white flowers before fruiting. Starting at $3.95.
Bloom season. Good planting window.
Higher water demand in summer heat.
Growth slows as temperatures cool.
Bloom season. May lose some foliage in cold snaps. Can be planted in mild winter periods.
Strawberries require full sun — at least 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. In NE Florida, plant September through October in a raised bed or container where air circulation is good and afternoon light is unobstructed.
Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Use drip or micro-irrigation directed at the root zone rather than overhead watering to minimize fruit and foliage disease. In NE Florida's sandy soils, check moisture frequently and water every 1–2 days during dry spells in early establishment.
Plant in slightly acidic (pH 5.5–6.5), well-drained sandy or loamy soil amended with compost. Apply a starter fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium at planting; side-dress with a balanced fertilizer monthly through the season. Avoid excess nitrogen, which promotes foliage over fruit.
