Spiraea japonica
Fresh this week. Last restocked Apr 8.
Japanese spirea (Spiraea japonica) is a compact deciduous shrub bearing clusters of pink to rose flowers in spring and summer, prized in cooler climates as a flowering hedge or border shrub. It is hardy in USDA zones 4–8 and typically struggles in NE Florida's Zone 9b summer heat and humidity; it is also considered invasive in the southeastern U.S. and is not recommended for Florida landscapes. Starting at $14.95.
Full sun is required for best flowering and compact habit. In NE Florida's intense heat, afternoon shade may extend the bloom season slightly, but plants in heavy shade become leggy and bloom poorly.
Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist; avoid drought stress, especially during NE Florida's summer heat. Spirea is poorly adapted to Zone 9b's intense heat and humidity — performance as a perennial shrub is marginal; treat as a seasonal plant or replace annually.
Plant in fertile, well-drained loamy soil with consistent moisture. Apply a balanced slow-release shrub fertilizer in early spring. Note: Spiraea japonica is considered invasive in the southeastern United States; check local regulations before planting and do not plant near natural areas.
