Silene regia
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 25.
Royal Catchfly (Silene regia) is a striking native perennial of the central and eastern U.S. producing tall stems topped with clusters of vivid scarlet five-petaled flowers in summer, highly attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. It is a short-lived perennial best managed by allowing self-seeding. In NE Florida zone 9b it is at the edge of its heat range — plant in a sunny, well-drained sandy site and let it naturalize for best long-term success. Starting at $9.95.
Royal Catchfly performs best in full sun, which produces the most vigorous growth and prolific scarlet flowering. In NE Florida's intense heat, a site with morning sun and light afternoon shade can reduce stress; avoid deep shade.
Royal Catchfly is drought tolerant once established, preferring dry to medium moisture. In NE Florida, water during establishment; thereafter, rely on natural rainfall. Excellent drainage is critical — waterlogged soil is fatal. Lower leaves may yellow in peak summer heat, which is normal.
Plant in lean, sandy, well-drained soil; clay or heavy soils cause root rot. Florida's sandy soils are well-suited. No regular fertilization needed. Royal Catchfly is short-lived; allow it to self-seed annually to maintain a colony. Avoid over-enriching the soil, which promotes lush but weak growth.
