Clarkia unguiculata
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 25.
Elegant clarkia (Clarkia unguiculata) is a California native annual bearing loose spires of delicate 4-petaled flowers in pink, rose, purple, and white on upright, slender stems. In NE Florida it is grown as a cool-season annual — sow seed in fall for winter and spring bloom — and it attracts native bees and butterflies. Starting at $2.99.
Elegant clarkia grows best in full sun; in NE Florida, choose a site with good air circulation to reduce disease pressure and plant in fall so it establishes and blooms during the cooler winter and spring months.
Water regularly to keep soil evenly moist but not soggy; avoid wetting foliage to prevent fungal disease — extra moisture extends bloom time, but plants dislike waterlogged conditions.
Grow in moderately fertile, well-drained sandy or loam soil; avoid overly rich soil, which promotes leafy growth at the expense of flowers — little to no additional fertilizer is needed and plants perform best sown directly in the garden in fall (October–November) in NE Florida.
