Luffa aegyptiaca
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 25.
Loofah Gourd (Luffa aegyptiaca) is a fast-growing tropical annual vine in the cucumber family, producing large, ridged fruits whose fibrous interior is harvested as natural sponges. In NE Florida it thrives as a warm-season crop planted after frost; fruits can also be eaten young like squash. Attractive yellow flowers attract bees and other pollinators. Starting at $4.39.
Plant in full sun — loofah needs maximum sun exposure to produce vigorous vines and fruit. Provide a sturdy trellis or fence; vines can exceed 15 feet.
Water consistently to keep soil evenly moist, especially once fruit begins forming; avoid waterlogging. In NE Florida, mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce fruit rot from ground contact.
Grow in fertile, well-drained loam enriched with compost; follow cucumber fertilizer guidelines — apply a balanced fertilizer at planting and side-dress with nitrogen mid-season. Sow seeds March–July in NE Florida after frost risk has passed.
