Blackberry Lily (Iris domestica) produces sprays of spotted orange flowers in summer followed by seed pods that split open to reveal clusters of shiny black seeds resembling blackberries. Formerly classified as Belamcanda chinensis. Starting at $19.95.
Plant Blackberry Lily in full sun to part shade; in NE Florida, afternoon shade is beneficial during peak summer heat to prevent leaf scorch. A minimum of 4–6 hours of direct sunlight produces the best flowering.
Water regularly until established, then reduce to low-moderate irrigation; Blackberry Lily is drought tolerant once established. In NE Florida, ensure excellent drainage — crown rot will kill plants in consistently wet soil.
Grow in well-drained sandy or loamy soil; NE Florida's sandy soils are generally suitable. Enrich with compost at planting. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer lightly in spring; avoid over-fertilizing, which can cause lush foliage at the expense of blooms.
Blackberry Lily is a perennial for Zone 9b coastal Florida gardens, reaching 2-3 feet × 1 foot.
