Salt Tolerance Zones
- Frontal Zone (Highest): Beachfront, direct spray. Sea Oats, Cocoplum, Sea Grape, Railroad Vine, Cabbage Palm.
- Transition Zone (Moderate): 2-3 blocks inland. Wax Myrtle, Muhly Grass, Lantana, Blanket Flower, Indian Hawthorn.
- Protected Zone (Low): West of Intracoastal. Azaleas, Hydrangeas, Roses, Camellias, Japanese Maples.
Coastal Design Strategies
- Create Windbreaks: Plant Sea Grape, Wax Myrtle, or Cabbage Palms as first line of defense for delicate plants behind.
- Zone by Exposure: High-tolerance in exposed spots (oceanfront, corners), moderate-tolerance behind buildings/windbreaks.
- Prioritize Natives: Sea Grape, Cocoplum, Beach Sunflower evolved for these conditions, less water, less fertilizer.
- Improve Your Soil: Amend sandy soil with compost, mulch 2-3" deep. Without this, even tough plants struggle.
Quick Care Tips
- Mulch: 3-4 inches deep to hold moisture in fast-draining sand.
- Water: Deeply and less often to push roots down past the salt layer.
- Fertilize: Slow-release, sparingly, nutrients wash through sand fast.
- After Storms: Rinse foliage with fresh water to clear salt buildup.
Common Mistakes
- Wrong Zone: Planting salt-sensitive species in frontal or transition zones.
- Midday Watering: Overhead water in sun magnifies salt damage on leaves.
- Skipping Mulch: Exposed sandy soil dries out in hours.
- Invasive Species: Never plant Australian Pine or Brazilian Pepper, they crowd out natives.
