Selaginella
Fresh this week. Last restocked Jun 15.
Selaginella (spikemoss) is a primitive vascular groundcover — not a true moss — with soft, scale-like foliage that forms dense, spreading mats in moist shade. In NE Florida it performs well as a shaded groundcover or terrarium subject where consistent moisture and high humidity can be maintained. Starting at $9.95.
Grow in bright indirect light to full shade; avoid direct sun, which scorches the delicate foliage. In NE Florida, deep shade under tree canopy or on a shaded north/east-facing patio is ideal.
Keep soil consistently moist — Selaginella wilts and desiccates quickly when the soil dries out. In NE Florida's dry season, water frequently; during the rainy season ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot.
Plant in humus-rich, moist, well-draining soil (peat-perlite or loam-compost mix); slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0) is ideal. Feed lightly with a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring; heavy feeding is unnecessary.
